Woden Contractors (Wodens) is dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of its workforce through its Giving Together Program. The social impact initiative raises funds for local charities and highlights the vital mental health resources available within the local Canberra community.

Since September 2024, Wodens has run the Giving Together Program, allowing employees to opt in and donate $2 from each pay cycle. At the end of every quarter, the company matches the donated amount and awards it to the chosen charity.

For their third quarter and most recent round of donations, EveryMan Australia was chosen as the recipient. Each dollar donated will help provide critical services to assist men with high and complex support needs.

Greg Aldridge, CEO of EveryMan Australia says EveryMan provides essential support to men experiencing complex mental health challenges, homelessness, violence, and social exclusion.

“EveryMan programs include counselling, violence prevention, and community integration, assisting men at risk of isolation and discrimination.

"Mental health challenges are prevalent within the construction industry, and raising awareness of our services is crucial. By connecting with this sector, we can ensure that those in need receive the support they deserve. Our mission is to provide a safe space and effective counselling, helping individuals navigate life's challenges and build resilience,” said Greg.

Wodens Systems Manager Therese Bingley said that EveryMan Australia was selected as the latest beneficiary because 80% of Wodens workforce is male, and supporting the organisation will help men on and offsite by providing important mental health resources.

“It is really important that we help break down barriers around mental health and encourage our team to reach out for help when they need it.”

According to a recent report by RMIT on mental health in construction, the industry is one of the most high-risk sectors for mental health challenges, with young construction workers being more than twice as likely to take their own lives compared to other young Australian men.

The suicide rate among men in the construction industry is six times higher than death by workplace accidents. Through its Giving Together Program, Wodens is taking a proactive approach to mental health by raising awareness about local support services available to their employees.

“We are dedicated to raising awareness of the services available to employees and their families. By keeping EveryMan Australia’s and like-minded resources visible throughout the workplace, Wodens ensures that employees are reminded that tailored support is available.”

Mental health challenges in the construction industry are compounded by pressures such as maintaining a work-life balance, meeting demanding schedules, and coping with housing and financial strains. In Canberra, where the cost of living is high, many men face the difficult decision of balancing work responsibilities with family obligations, often feeling unable to take time off when needed.

“We recognise the importance of supporting employees facing some of these challenges,” said Therese.

“As one of Australia’s oldest construction companies, Wodens has always been family-oriented, ensuring no one is treated like a number. Our employees are directly employed rather than subcontracted, which allows for a more cohesive and supportive work environment.”

“To complement highlighting local services, we also regularly check in with our staff through toolbox talks and host larger events every quarter. Management encourages a culture of looking out for one another. Fostering a supportive environment is essential for colleagues who spend every day together. We often strengthen this sense of community by sharing BBQs and lunches, reinforcing that we’re all in this together.”

We believe that talking to someone early is so important, and we will continue to prioritise mental health training, resources and open communication with our employees.”
