As Homelessness Week 2024 shines a spotlight on the pressing issue of homelessness across the country, EveryMan Australia's Men's Accommodation and Support Service commemorates 20 years of dedicated service to the Canberra community. This milestone underscores the critical role the organisation plays in providing essential support to men and their families facing housing insecurity.
Since its inception, MASS has offered accommodation and comprehensive support services tailored to help men and their children achieve stability and independence. Over the past two decades, the organisation has assisted men in rebuilding their lives and securing housing which has been the foundation for fostering resilience and promoting a better quality of life.
In 2024 alone, EveryMan has received 220 referrals from men seeking accommodation. However, due to the acute shortage of public housing in Canberra, has only been able to assist with 116 of these referrals.
Greg Aldridge, EveryMan CEO said that among these referrals, 13 were single fathers with children, highlighting the growing need for targeted support services for this vulnerable group.
"As we mark 20 years of service, we are reminded of the ongoing challenges faced by men with high and complex needs in our community, and what some people aren’t always aware of is that these men can be primary caregivers with nowhere to go.
“The high number of referrals we receive reflects a significant demand for our services, and it is disheartening that we are unable to help everyone due to the lack of available housing. This Homelessness Week, we urge policymakers, stakeholders, and the public to recognise the urgent need for more affordable housing solutions."
EveryMan is committed to addressing homelessness and is an organisation that provides a range of services, including supported accommodation, outreach programs, and individualised support plans designed to empower men and their children. These services not only address immediate housing needs but also focus on long-term stability, health, and social connection.
“Every man needs a hand sometimes. What’s missing for many men, particularly the ones with high and complex support needs, is an agency that’s committed to them as men, committed to helping them in the areas of life that really matter to them by having access to professional and effective services that can really make a difference - to them and the people in their lives.” Said Greg.
As EveryMan celebrates this significant milestone, it also calls for increased community support and collaboration to expand its reach and impact.
